Abu Dhabi has taken a significant leap into the future of urban mobility with the launch of fully driverless robotaxi trial operations by WeRide, a global leader in autonomous driving technology. This milestone marks the first deployment of fully driverless taxis in the Middle East and signals a major advancement in smart transportation within the emirate.

WeRide’s Driverless Robotaxi Trials Begin

Starting this quarter, WeRide has begun piloting a fleet of robotaxis on public roads in Abu Dhabi without any safety drivers behind the wheel. This development is a historic first for the region and demonstrates the maturity of autonomous vehicle technology in one of the world’s most dynamic urban environments.

The robotaxis operate using advanced sensors, cameras, and artificial intelligence systems that enable them to navigate traffic, obey road rules, and ensure passenger safety. The vehicles are fully electric, supporting Abu Dhabi’s sustainability goals by reducing emissions and promoting clean energy transportation.

Expansion of Service Coverage

Alongside the driverless trials, WeRide is expanding its robotaxi service to cover two high-demand areas in Abu Dhabi: Al Maryah Island, the city’s financial hub, and Al Reem Island, a vibrant residential and lifestyle district. These new zones complement the existing network that includes Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and routes to and from Zayed International Airport, where WeRide has been operating with safety drivers since 2021.

This expansion aims to bring smart mobility solutions to more users across the emirate, making autonomous transport more accessible and convenient for residents and visitors alike.

Partnership with Uber and Regulatory Support

WeRide’s autonomous taxis are integrated with the Uber platform, allowing riders to request robotaxi rides through the familiar Uber app. This partnership, launched in December 2024, is the largest commercial robotaxi service outside the US and China. Initially, rides included safety operators onboard, but the current trials have moved to fully driverless operations, pending regulatory approval for commercial deployment.

The company received the UAE’s first and only national license for self-driving vehicles in July 2023, authorizing it to test and operate autonomous vehicles on public roads nationwide. WeRide also collaborates closely with Abu Dhabi’s Integrated Transport Centre and the Smart & Autonomous Systems Council, advising on infrastructure development and legislation to support the growth of autonomous mobility.

Safety and Technology at the Core

Safety remains a top priority for WeRide. The robotaxis are equipped with state-of-the-art LiDAR, radar, and camera systems that provide a 360-degree view of the environment. These technologies enable the vehicles to detect obstacles, pedestrians, and other road users in real-time, adjusting their speed and route accordingly to ensure a smooth and secure ride.

WeRide’s autonomous driving platform, WeRide One, is highly adaptable and has been tested extensively, accumulating over 1,800 days of public road operations globally. This experience underpins the company’s confidence in the safety and reliability of its driverless taxis.

Abu Dhabi’s Vision for Autonomous Mobility

The launch of fully driverless robotaxi trials aligns with Abu Dhabi’s broader vision to transform its transport sector. The emirate aims for autonomous vehicles to account for 25% of all trips by 2040, contributing to a 15% reduction in carbon emissions and an 18% decrease in road accidents.

The autonomous taxi initiative supports these goals by offering an energy-efficient, low-emission alternative to traditional vehicles. It also promises to reduce traffic congestion and improve travel convenience for residents and visitors.

Public Access and Future Plans

Currently, the robotaxi service is available to the public in select areas, with rides offered free of charge in some zones, such as routes between Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and Zayed International Airport. Passengers can book rides via the TXAI app or Uber, enjoying a quiet, hands-free journey without the need for a driver.

WeRide plans to progressively introduce commercial driverless rides and expand service areas throughout Abu Dhabi starting summer 2025, subject to regulatory approvals. This phased rollout will help gather user feedback and further refine the technology and operational protocols.

WeRide’s launch of fully driverless robotaxi trials in Abu Dhabi represents a landmark moment for autonomous mobility in the Middle East. By combining cutting-edge technology, strategic partnerships, and strong regulatory support, Abu Dhabi is positioning itself as a global leader in smart, sustainable urban transport.

This initiative not only enhances travel convenience and safety but also advances the emirate’s environmental goals and vision for a futuristic transport ecosystem. As driverless taxis become more common on Abu Dhabi’s roads, they will pave the way for a new era of mobility that is cleaner, safer, and more efficient.
