Appointment as CEO of Agthia Group

In July 2020, Alan Smith was appointed CEO of Agthia Group PJSC, succeeding Jamal Salem Al Dhaheri. Agthia Group is a leading F&B company headquartered in Abu Dhabi and listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX). The company operates across the UAE, GCC, and wider Middle East regions, offering products such as bottled water, flour, bakery items, dates, and animal feed.

Smith’s appointment came at a time when Agthia was poised for international expansion. Khalifa Sultan Al Suwaidi, Chairman of Agthia Group and Chief Investment Officer at ADQ, praised Smith’s depth of experience and leadership capabilities. Under his guidance, Agthia aimed to capitalize on its market position while diversifying its product offerings and expanding into new territories.

Strategic Vision for Agthia

Alan Smith’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping Agthia’s long-term strategy to become an F&B leader by 2025. The strategy focuses on three core pillars: growth, efficiency, and capability.

Growth

Smith has prioritized scaling operations in key markets while expanding into higher-margin categories such as healthy snacks and plant-based products. He has also championed an inorganic growth strategy through acquisitions of strong consumer brands that align with Agthia’s vision.

Efficiency

To enhance profitability, Smith has implemented measures to streamline operations. These include optimizing supply chains, reducing costs through synergy extraction, and simplifying business processes. Under his leadership, Agthia targets AED 200 million in savings by leveraging operational efficiencies.

Capability

Smith emphasizes talent development and digital transformation to align with the demands of a growing organization. He has introduced performance management systems and sustainability initiatives to ensure long-term success.

Key Achievements

Since taking the helm at Agthia Group, Alan Smith has achieved several milestones:

  1. International Expansion: He has spearheaded efforts to enter new markets while strengthening existing ones.
  1. Portfolio Diversification: Under his leadership, Agthia has shifted its product mix toward higher-margin categories.
  1. Operational Excellence: Smith has driven cost savings through lean procurement practices and streamlined manufacturing processes.
  1. Sustainability Initiatives: He has integrated ESG principles into Agthia’s operations to enhance consumer trust and shareholder value.

Leadership Style

Alan Smith is known for his collaborative approach to leadership. He fosters innovation by encouraging teams to challenge conventions and explore new opportunities. His ability to balance strategic vision with operational execution has earned him respect among peers and stakeholders alike.

Smith’s focus on agility ensures that Agthia remains competitive in a dynamic industry. He believes in deliberate pacing of progress while protecting core business areas—a philosophy that aligns with the company’s mission to deliver value to shareholders while contributing to economic development in Abu Dhabi.

Alan Smith’s journey from Mondelez International to Agthia Group reflects his commitment to excellence in the FMCG sector. As CEO of Agthia Group PJSC, he continues to drive transformation with a clear vision for growth, efficiency, and capability enhancement. His leadership positions Agthia as a regional powerhouse and sets benchmarks for innovation and sustainability in the global F&B industry.
