This anxiety is particularly pronounced in nations like South Africa and the US, where upcoming elections heighten the demand for precise and factual reporting.

Paying for News

Another hurdle for news organizations is the reluctance of audiences to pay for online news subscriptions. Post-pandemic growth has plateaued, with only 17% of respondents across 20 countries willing to pay for online news—a figure that has remained static over three years.

The Rise of News Influencers

Platforms like TikTok are witnessing a shift where individual influencers are becoming more influential in delivering news than traditional media outlets. A survey revealed that 57% of TikTok users who consume news on the app prefer individual personalities over journalists or news brands.

Strategies for Navigating the AI Era

To address these challenges, news organizations must adopt strategies that blend technological innovation with journalistic values. Building transparency around AI usage, fostering audience trust, and leveraging AI to augment—not replace—human journalism are critical steps toward sustainable digital transformation.

The impact of AI on people’s perception of news is profound. While it can enhance accessibility and diversity of content, it also raises questions about authenticity and bias. The challenge for newsrooms is to balance the use of AI with maintaining trust and credibility among their audience.

As AI continues to reshape the landscape of news production, it presents both opportunities and challenges. News organizations must navigate these waters carefully to harness the potential of AI while addressing consumer concerns and sustaining their business models.
