Oman government acquires budget airline SalamAir. The Government of the Sultanate of Oman has completed its acquisition of SalamAir, the country’s low-cost airline, as part of a strategic effort to strengthen the national aviation industry and expand air connectivity.

Acquisition Finalised

The government confirmed that it now fully owns SalamAir after acquiring a majority stake previously held by private investors, marking a major development in Oman’s aviation sector. Officials stated that SalamAir will continue to operate independently alongside Oman’s flag carrier, Oman Air, with no merger planned. Both airlines will maintain separate brands, fleets, and services.

Operational Independence Maintained

Transport Minister Eng. Said bin Hamoud Al Maawali said the acquisition aims to reduce overlapping routes between SalamAir and Oman Air, optimise fleet use, and broaden air travel options for passengers. He emphasised that keeping the two carriers distinct allows each to focus on its market niche: SalamAir in low-cost, regional travel and Oman Air in full-service and long-haul operations.

The government has reiterated that the move does not signal any operational merger, and that both airlines will preserve their identities and service standards. Coordination on network planning and resource sharing may take place, but immediate workforce changes are not expected.

Benefits for Connectivity and Efficiency

Officials argue the acquisition will improve operational efficiency across the sector and expand connectivity within Oman and to international destinations. By reducing duplication on certain routes and better using aircraft capacity, the government expects enhanced travel options and potentially lower costs for passengers.

Industry commentators note that the government’s ownership could bring greater financial stability to SalamAir and support broader efforts to develop Oman’s aviation infrastructure under national strategic plans. Enhanced cooperation between the two carriers on scheduling and services could also benefit travellers, particularly on connecting flights through Muscat.

Looking Ahead

With the Oman government’s acquisition of budget airline SalamAir now complete, stakeholders are watching how the airline will expand its route network and service offerings while contributing to tourism and economic growth. The move aligns with broader goals to make Oman a more accessible and competitive destination for both business and leisure travel.
