The Visionary Founder

Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah and a member of the UAE’s Supreme Council, founded the University of Sharjah in October 1997. He envisioned it as a leading institution that draws inspiration from Islamic architecture and history while addressing the educational needs of the region. His leadership has guided the university’s growth, making it a key player in Sharjah’s socioeconomic development.

A History of Growth and Expansion

Sheikh Sultan established the university to fill a gap in higher education within Sharjah and nearby areas. From its start, it has expanded rapidly. In 2011, leaders inaugurated the Kalba campus for 100 million AED, followed by the Al Dhaid campus in 2015 for 60 million AED. The university also opened a teaching hospital and a dentistry hospital in 2011. Over the years, it has added advanced facilities like libraries that can hold up to a million books and a virtual stock market simulator in 2013. Today, the university enrolls over 16,000 students, including a mix of Emirati nationals, other Arabs, and international learners.

Academic Excellence and Programs

The University of Sharjah delivers 111 accredited degree programs across various levels, including 56 bachelor’s, 38 master’s, 15 PhD, and 2 diploma options. It operates through 14 colleges that cover fields like medicine, engineering, business, law, arts, sciences, and Islamic studies. Engineering programs hold ABET accreditation, while business degrees carry AACSB approval. The university emphasizes practical training through centers like the Sharjah Surgical Institute and Clinical Training Center, which partner with global bodies such as the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

State-of-the-Art Campus and Facilities

The main campus in University City spans 36,328 square meters and features modern amenities. Students have access to two dedicated centers with bookstores, banks, shops, and restaurants. Separate sports facilities for men and women include swimming pools, gyms, and halls. Dormitories provide comfortable living with clinics, study areas, computer labs, and recreation spaces. The university runs free bus services for residents and connects all campuses through private transportation.

Research and Innovation

Researchers at the University of Sharjah drive progress through three main institutes: the Research Institute of Medical & Health Sciences (RIMHS), the Research Institute of Sciences and Engineering (RISE), and the Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (RIHSS). Nine centers of excellence tackle local needs in areas like precision medicine, biotechnology, sustainability, and artificial intelligence. The university supports innovation with departments for funding, outreach, scientific publishing, and technology transfer. Notable projects include collaborations on smart waste systems and evidence-based medical research.

Vibrant Student Life

Students at the University of Sharjah enjoy a lively community with diverse activities. Clubs and events promote cultural exchange among its multicultural population, which includes 36% Emirati students and 10% internationals. Sports teams compete in various disciplines, and facilities encourage fitness and teamwork. The university fosters engagement through community service and partnerships, helping students build skills beyond the classroom.

Global Rankings and Recognition

The University of Sharjah earns high marks in international rankings. It ranks 328th in the QS World University Rankings for 2026, 301-350 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2025, and 245th in the US News & World Report Best Global Universities for 2025. Locally, it tops the UAE rankings and places fourth in the Arab region.

Looking Ahead

The University of Sharjah continues to grow under strong leadership, preparing students for global challenges. It bridges cultures and advances knowledge, staying true to its founder’s vision of excellence.
