When it comes to change, you can’t deny that you feel that little chill in your belly. Be it in any area of life, but especially if it is work as you will spend most hours of your life in the office. Different environments, rules, habits, and people will make you more cautious about your behavior.

However, new professional experiences are not to be feared. On the contrary, as everything you go through in life must be seen as learning. You certainly had to adapt to a new school, neighborhood, social group, or maybe even a new city, at some point in your life. And this is just another chance to exercise the human being’s capacity to prove the social being that he is.

Want to know more about it? So, read on and check out some tips for adapting to a new workplace

Listen to the people around you

In the first days of work, try to listen more than talk. Listen to the instructions of your superiors, take all your doubts, and ask your colleagues for tips. Also, ask about the trajectory of those who work with you and seek to establish constructive relationships.

Also, take time out to learn from those who are already a part of the company, and ask for tips and help whenever you need it. Don’t be afraid to ask! People can be more caring and willing to help than you think.

Get as much information as possible about the company and its culture

Before starting work, find out what the company’s dress code is to make sure you arrive according to the policy. Consider that you are going to be introduced to the team: so act friendly, smile, and communicate who you are, where you come from, and what you can contribute. Be grateful for the opportunity and help that you could request in this induction period to the functions and culture of the company. The first sign of consideration towards your colleagues is punctuality, and you must show it from the beginning of your work; Therefore, try to arrive a few minutes before the check-in time.

Pay attention to the small details of your working environment

Once you’ve learned the basics of the job, seek to uncover the personal preferences of your supervisors. Find out what the company defines as successful and its various projects. It will allow you to set your own goals and to be in office in the performance of your duties. Try to adjust to the new job by paying attention to the little details of the work environment, such as about the company’s website, activity reports, etc. And, treat everyone with respect while showing a genuine interest in your work, the transition period will go smoothly and increase your chances of success in the business.

Ask for feedback and solve your doubts

It is obvious to have doubts about the operation of the company, even about your work. To clarify them, you must know who you should ask and when is the best time for it. There are 3 golden rules that you must comply with if you do not want to be a burden for the person in charge of welcoming you into the company:

  • If you can resolve the question yourself, do so.
  • Write down the doubts that arise to ask them all at once, instead of interrupting the work of others intermittently.
  • Write down the answers if necessary, but avoid asking the same questions over and over again.

It is worth asking your supervisors and colleagues to value your work, to find out if you are meeting their expectations, what you can do better, and how to achieve it.

Give yourself time

The expectations are, of course, not the same depending on your profile (junior/senior), but in any case, you will not be asked to be operational from the first days. So have that in mind and de-stress. So focus on your priority missions: understanding your environment and integrating yourself.

It is quite normal not to master everything in the first few weeks if you feel too full of information or missions, ask for help. Do not hesitate to review the pace with your manager, it’s all about transparency and communication.

If you ask yourself questions, doubt yourself, or the job: do not be discouraged, everything comes at the right time to those who know how to wait! Be positive and seek solutions to the problems you are having.

Concluding remarks

And finally, do not go crazy with the thought that you may not be taken. Yes, there is always a chance that you will not pass the probationary period. But this does not mean that after that, the end of the world will come. “The worst thing that can happen is you go looking for a new job. But here, too, everything was not in vain, – says psychologist Nadezhda Mankovskaya.
