While leading – especially in times of uncertainty and crisis – you must avoid showing signs of immaturity or lack of preparation in leadership that will make your employees feel insecure. After all, a person’s true leadership skills are tested in challenging situations or in times of crisis. Performance under stress can show how quick or perceptive a person is, or on the contrary, it can show where their weaknesses are.

As a leader or as an entrepreneur, you must always maintain control over yourself and stay calm in difficult situations. At the end of the day, it’s all about how you embrace your mistakes in times of crisis (which inevitably affects all organizations at some point) that defines your ability as a true leader. Here are some of the factors that help leaders respond to challenges and bring maturity and insight to face difficult situations:

Don’t let your emotions control you

In times of crisis, leaders invariably find themselves in a stressful and tense atmosphere. There are enormous mental, physical and psychological pressures that can cause you to be agitated or even shout at people around you. It may seem that giving up is the easy way.

But, this is the time to take care of your thoughts, emotions, and the way you deal with problems. Over time, good leaders become adept at exercising self-control. Often a periodic reminder of the big picture for you and your team helps to promote self-control. When nothing else seems to work, try to sleep a good night and start over the next day. Allowing emotions to get the best of you can cause your subordinates to lose faith in your abilities.

Maintain a positive attitude from start to finish

The end of a crisis does not happen only when the leader begins to rise. Instead, it occurs when the team as a whole begins to recover, which can take a while. But, by maintaining a positive attitude on the face and pushing the excellence of the team, the leader can maintain high morale, which will put things back to the pace, in addition to contributing to the team’s confidence and respect.

Leaders set the tone for the organization they serve.  A positive attitude can neutralize chaos and allow a leader to get through any difficulty. Employees feed on the attitude of these leaders in times of uncertainty. In tough times, maintain a positive mental attitude and never stop moving forward.

Show empathy and know how to make a difference

In crises with contours similar to the one we are going through, people’s minds turn, to their survival and other basic needs. Will I get sick? What will happen to my family? And what happens next? Who will take care of us? Leaders should not leave these questions unanswered.

It is exactly in times of crisis that they must ensure a vital aspect of their functions: to make a positive difference in people’s lives. And to do so, they must know the personal and professional challenges that their employees and their families are experiencing. To the extent that the crisis will affect people in different ways, they must pay particular attention to how people are fighting their struggle and take corresponding measures that can help them. Finally, it is vital that leaders not only show empathy but are open to empathy with others, while remaining attentive to their well-being.

Act like someone who has experienced this before

Great leaders know that one of the most effective ways to maintain your composure during tough times is to act like you’re there before. Leaders who act to show that they have gone through the process of solving previous problems many times before are those with a strong executive presence who approach the issue at hand with a sense of elegance and grace. They are patient; they are active listeners and genuinely take a compassionate approach to alleviate the difficulties that the team is experiencing.

Final Considerations

Crises require people who know how to be calm in making decisions, and leaders must be optimistic that the organization will find a way out of their difficult situation. In a crisis, people are in a state of attention focused on their survival and basic needs. Therefore, effective leaders at this time are those who make a positive difference in people’s lives!
