In a deeply alarming escalation, Iran executes 29 convicts in a single day, sparking renewed international outrage. This mass execution occurred just a day after Iran faced global condemnation for hanging a man linked to the 2022 protests, highlighting the government’s unyielding approach to dissent.

Iran Executes 29 Convicts in a Single Day

A Day of Mass Executions

On a day that will be remembered with dread, 26 individuals were executed in a group execution within the confines of a single prison. Among those executed were two Afghan nationals, underscoring the diversity of the victims caught in Iran’s stringent legal system. The charges leading to these executions ranged from murder and drug-related offenses to rape.

The Role of Human Rights Organizations

Human rights organizations have been quick to react. Both the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) and the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) confirmed that at least two dozen people were executed in Karaj, a city near Tehran. These groups, along with others, have long accused Iran of utilizing the death penalty as a tool of oppression, particularly in the wake of the widespread protests that shook the nation in 2022.

The Shadow of 2022 Protests

The protests of 2022 were a significant turning point for Iran, with thousands taking to the streets to demand reform and greater freedoms. In response, the Iranian government has intensified its crackdown, using the death penalty to instill fear and silence dissent. The recent executions are seen by many as part of this broader strategy.

The Case of Gholamreza Rasaei

One of the most notable executions was that of Gholamreza Rasaei, the 10th individual to be executed by the Iranian government in connection with the 2022 protests. His execution was shrouded in secrecy, with neither his family nor his lawyer receiving prior notice. This lack of transparency has drawn sharp criticism from human rights groups and foreign governments alike.

International Condemnation

France’s foreign ministry was quick to condemn the execution of Rasaei, labeling it as an “unfair and inhumane punishment.” This sentiment was echoed by the US deputy special envoy for Iran, who accused the Iranian government of subjecting protesters to “sham trials and forced confessions.” The US official further emphasized the troubling trend of the Iranian judiciary ignoring claims of torture used to extract confessions, as was allegedly the case with Rasaei.

A Grim Statistic

With the latest executions, Iran has now executed at least 345 people this year alone, a staggering figure that shows no signs of slowing down. This relentless use of the death penalty has continued unabated, even after the swearing-in of the reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian last week. Despite hopes that his leadership might signal a shift towards more lenient policies, these hopes appear to have been dashed by the continued executions.

The mass execution of 29 individuals in Iran is a stark reminder of the country’s harsh approach to justice, especially in the face of dissent. As international pressure mounts, the Iranian government remains unyielding, using the death penalty as a means to silence opposition and maintain control. The global community must continue to speak out against these actions, advocating for the protection of human rights and the abolition of the death penalty in Iran.
