When we talk about leadership and the qualities of a leader, several factors come into play. Being a leader does not only have to do with ideas and proposals, but it also has to do with the practical aspect, with actions.

Leadership can be defined as the ability of an individual to influence, motivate, and make employees capable of contributing to the effectiveness and success of organizations. Knowing how to influence or motivate a group is not a miracle, rather it’s a characteristic of a positive leader. The leader stimulates motivation and trains each employee towards a common goal.

Even if there is no specific personality type, leaders rely on identical components. Let’s see the objectives you must achieve to be a positive leader.

Future vision

This is the first point. The leader determines the objectives to be reached, negotiates them, and communicates them to his team. A leader capable of defining and communicating his vision outlining a path and direction offers the people around him a common purpose, directs all the efforts of his team towards the same end, giving a sense of importance to daily work. They have to do with short or medium-term vision.

The vision for the leader is quite different. It is well above and in the longer term. It means placing the action in a long-term perspective and controlling its trajectory towards the set target. Even if it seems complex, the vision is a guarantee of success. It answers the following questions: ·

  • Where do you want to take your company?
  • What do you want to say about it in 5 years, 10 years, or more?
  • What is this project for?
  • What other goals does it serve?

A confident leader with a vision of the future never stops training and does the same with his group, in addition to identifying those people who could fulfill a leadership role preparing them for it.

Positive approach towards team members

To work effectively as a team and to maintain a healthy environment in the organization, the leader must have a positive approach towards the work. But, that does not mean stopping correcting the mistakes of his colleagues or speaking when something is wrong but rather doing it constructively.

A positive leader expresses himself in words that do not allude to negativity but sees the mistake as a valuable learning opportunity for the group, without ridiculing or making others feel bad. Converting any negative expression into a positive one, knowing how to recognize opportunities in what others would consider failures, and being an example to follow for the rest, this is what a leader with a positive approach achieves.

Having good communication skills

Knowing how to communicate seems like an accessible quality in any leader, but getting it right is not that easy. A positive leader has communication skills that not only serve to speak to the group but also to listen to what the rest have to say.

The communication in an organization is a two-way street that should flow without clogging, so a leader must be clear in communicating, using language that everyone understands, and open channels for those working with him to ask questions and provide suggestions both individually and in groups.

Group meetings, open contact routes, dynamics to get to know each other and join the team, space for recreation, etc. All this contributes to the communication flowing and that a positive leader must be able to generate.

Ability to delegate tasks

More than just distributing the work among the professionals of his team, the leader must identify the talents and skills of each one so that the delegated task is successful. Delegating also requires planning, training, coordination of services performed, and monitoring.

A leader needs to delegate even highly complex and stimulating tasks, but it is necessary to choose the ideal talent for each job. No team remains motivated by performing only operational tasks, routine services, and without challenges.

Take advantage of each other’s strengths. The Secret is to put the right person in the right place.

Humility

Humility must always be the basis for good leadership. This characteristic cannot be ignored if you have the role of leading people to a purpose or goal in your company. Humility is linked to listening to each employee, being willing to talk to them, to find out what are their strengths and weaknesses, and their desires in the company. It will also help you better delegate tasks, and make your employees more productive without being frustrated by not being able to perform a task accurately.

Wrapping up

Currently, the business world is very demanding and needs upright leaders who are committed to success, which is why these characteristics are essential in today’s leaders. Integrate these skills into your work team, develop leaders, and lead your company to achieve its objectives.
