Al Layan Oasis tourism project takes Dubai’s desert experience to a new level with a major investment aimed at attracting visitors and promoting sustainable outdoor tourism. The ambitious development, announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, will create a unique oasis destination in the Al Marmoom desert that blends nature, recreation, and leisure.

A New Tourism Landmark in the Desert

The Al Layan Oasis tourism project will occupy about one million square metres of desert land, roughly 50 minutes from central Dubai. At its heart will be a vast lake covering around 250,000 square metres, surrounded by carefully planned attractions and visitor amenities. The development is part of a larger AED4 billion (around $1.08 billion) push under Dubai’s Blue and Green Spaces Roadmap 2030, which focuses on expanding green and recreational areas across the emirate.

Designed to attract an estimated 330,000 visitors each year, the project supports Dubai’s broader goals of sustainability, quality of life, and eco-tourism. It aligns with the Dubai Countryside and Rural Areas Development Plan, the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033, and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, reflecting the city’s holistic planning approach that balances urban growth with environmental stewardship.

What Visitors Will Find

Al Layan Oasis will be divided into four main zones, each offering distinct experiences for visitors. The Gathering Oasis will act as the social hub, featuring an open-air cinema under the desert sky, an amphitheatre for cultural events, food truck areas, and flexible event spaces. This zone is intended to draw both families and cultural visitors with entertainment and leisure options in a scenic outdoor setting.

The Family Oasis will focus on relaxed outings with plenty of comfort and convenience, including 28 rest areas and dedicated play zones for children. This zone ensures a family-friendly environment where parents and kids can spend time exploring nature or enjoying picnics in shaded spaces.

Nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the Camping Oasis, which will support up to 100 caravans and include a fully equipped visitor centre. This area is ideal for those who want to immerse themselves in the desert landscape, spend nights under the stars, and learn about environmental conservation through educational exhibits.

The Recreation Oasis will offer a range of activities alongside retail outlets and services, enabling visitors to combine leisure with practical conveniences. Whether guests want to shop, dine, or take part in outdoor activities, this zone is planned to cater to diverse interests within a sustainable environment.

Designed for Comfort and Sustainability

To enhance the visitor experience, the project includes extensive infrastructure such as 1,000 parking spaces and 14 kilometres of walking and cycling trails. Of these paths, four kilometres will be elevated about five metres above the desert floor, offering panoramic views of the oasis, lake, and surrounding landscape. These elevated routes also connect to the broader trail network in the Al Marmoom area, encouraging active lifestyles and exploration.

Native plants and shaded areas are being integrated into the design to improve comfort while supporting the desert ecosystem. This careful landscaping approach helps reduce water use and maintain the natural character of the environment, demonstrating how the project balances tourism development with ecological responsibility.

A Boost for Dubai’s Tourism and Economy

Dubai’s investment in the Al Layan Oasis tourism project underscores the emirate’s strategy to diversify its tourism offerings beyond urban attractions like skyscrapers and shopping malls. By creating a destination that celebrates the desert environment, Dubai aims to give both residents and international visitors a new way to enjoy nature, culture, and community experiences.

With significant space allocated for private-sector investment, the project also opens opportunities for businesses to participate in this growing tourism hub. Al Layan Oasis tourism project is expected to become both a popular escape into nature and a key chapter in Dubai’s ongoing effort to blend sustainable planning with world-class tourism.
