In 1990, years before women in Saudi Arabia could even drive, Arwa Mutabagani broke new ground by riding into uncharted territory. She launched her first woman-headed equestrian and multi-sport club in the Kingdom, Trio Sporting. Three decades down the line, that dream has flowered into a thriving 22-hectare Jeddah complex alive with the beat of pounding hooves, tennis matches, children’s laughter, and whispers of dreams.
The spark for Trio Sporting ignited in Arwa’s early childhood. With no equestrian clubs in Saudi Arabia, her summers were spent riding in Italy — a place that felt magical. Those joyful months left an indelible mark on her. The absence of a proper riding school back home sparked the idea to create one. With a half-Italian heritage and a heart rooted in Saudi soil, Arwa’s vision blended European finesse with local pride — an ethos still deeply embedded in the club’s aesthetics, culture, and menu.
From Personal Passion to Olympic Legacy
Arwa’s Olympic aspirations as a show jumper were never fulfilled; she realized that dream through her daughter Dalma Malhas, who became the first Saudi female to win an Olympic medal. Accompanying Dalma on her journey was not only a moment of pride but a revalidation of Arwa’s belief that one should dare to dream. It strengthened her belief in pushing boundaries and encouraging young people to pursue their goals fearlessly. That experience became the foundation of her leadership at Trio. Today, mentoring young riders — especially girls — is a mission deeply ingrained in the club’s DNA. Arwa wants to give the opportunity to those who want to prove themselves that they not only belong in sports but can emerge as champions and leaders.

Trio Sporting has expanded well beyond equestrian sports. Now, with tennis courts and wellness facilities, it is in complete harmony with Vision 2030’s emphasis on quality of life. The reward, Arwa insists, is the intergenerational connection the club creates. “When I see parents who once came as children now bringing their kids ride, it’s deeply moving. The big smiles on their faces when they ride their ponies remind me why we started,” she says. This multigenerational component goes hand-in-hand with a larger sense of building community. Trio provides a healthy, safe, and serene setting, which is vital in today’s world.
Shattering Ceilings & Empowering the Next Generation
Arwa’s trailblazing accomplishments reach far beyond Trio. In 2008, she was the first woman appointed by King Abdullah to the Saudi Arabian Equestrian Federation, a mark of national achievement. One of the most ambitious projects under Arwa’s leadership has been hosting the International Show Jumping Tour in Jeddah. The event has placed Saudi Arabia on the international map as a destination for equestrian sport. “Watching young Saudi riders compete alongside international champions — and seeing the pride in their families’ eyes — was unforgettable,” she says. The most emotional moment, perhaps, was when local riders surprised her with a gift in front of a packed arena — a heartfelt gesture of gratitude for introducing this world-class format to their homeland.
Arwa’s unique leadership style blends Saudi and Italian influences. Both cultures value family, warmth, and connection. This blend has developed a place where East meets West — where the virtues of values of discipline, community, and joy harmoniously co-exist.
Innovation, Expansion & Dreaming Forward
As she looks toward the future, Arwa is excited about expanding Trio’s youth development programs. Plans are already underway to implement advanced athlete-tracking technologies and host more international coaching clinics and events. “We’re building a pipeline of champions, and we’re doing it with global excellence and local pride,” she adds.
Looking a decade ahead, Arwa’s vision is for Trio Sporting to be a place of discovery — a sanctuary where adolescents, particularly girls, discover their potential and soar with confidence. “I want Trio to be where lost boys and girls find direction, where fragile spirits gain strength, and where every child feels they can fly — on horseback and in life,” she adds.
