Oman Airports Welcome Over 8.4 Million Passengers by July 2024

The Sultanate of Oman has been witnessing significant growth in its aviation sector. By the end of July 2024, Oman’s airports welcomed over 8.4 million passengers, reflecting a 9.2% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This growth is indicative of the increasing popularity of Oman as a travel destination and the efficiency of its airport operations.

Passenger Growth in Muscat International Airport

Muscat International Airport, the largest and busiest airport in Oman, saw an impressive increase in passenger numbers. By the end of July 2024, the airport had served 7,571,148 passengers, representing an 8.9% growth from the previous year. This growth highlights Muscat’s strategic importance as a hub for international travel.

Significant Growth at Salalah Airport

Salalah Airport, serving the southern region of Oman, also experienced notable growth. The airport welcomed 827,486 passengers by the end of July 2024, marking a 10.3% increase compared to the previous year. Salalah, known for its unique Khareef season, continues to attract tourists, contributing to the airport’s increased passenger traffic.

Sohar Airport’s Remarkable Increase

Sohar Airport, located in the northern part of Oman, recorded the most significant growth among the Sultanate’s airports. The airport saw a staggering 114.4% increase in passenger numbers, reaching 45,126 passengers by the end of July 2024. This growth can be attributed to the airport’s expanding services and its strategic location, which is gradually becoming more attractive to travelers.

Challenges Faced by Duqm Airport

While most airports in Oman experienced growth, Duqm Airport saw a decrease in passenger numbers. By the end of July 2024, the airport recorded a 6.3% decline in passengers, with 362 domestic flights. This decrease highlights the challenges faced by the airport in attracting and maintaining passenger traffic, despite its potential as a strategic location for industrial and economic activities.

Increase in the Number of Flights

In addition to passenger growth, the number of flights through Oman’s airports also increased by 5.7%. A total of 63,219 flights were recorded by the end of July 2024, compared to 59,778 flights during the same period in 2023. This increase in flight numbers reflects the growing demand for air travel to and from Oman.

Oman’s airports have shown remarkable resilience and growth by welcoming over 8.4 million passengers by July 2024. The significant increase in passenger numbers and flights underscores the importance of Oman as a key player in the regional and international aviation landscape. However, the challenges faced by Duqm Airport indicate the need for targeted strategies to boost its growth. Overall, Oman’s aviation sector is poised for continued expansion, with its airports playing a crucial role in connecting the Sultanate to the world.
